My name is James Regan, in early June 2015 I started to suffer from groin pain. Over the next few weeks the pain started to move from my groin to my lower abdomen/pelvic area. I told a few of my GAA teammates, and they recommended I get assessed by Martin McIntyre and the team at the SISM Clinic.
On my first visit I was given a thorough examination. At the clinic they tested different leg squeezes to target the groin area. While doing these tests I realised how serious my injury was. When I pressed my legs together the pain would start in my groin and travel straight up to my lower abdomen. During my first visit the guys at the SISM clinic explained that I could continue playing hurling but the injury would only get worse and I wouldn’t be able to train to my full potential. This was very difficult to process as it was in the middle of championship season. However, I trusted their expertise and I finally understood the seriousness of my injury. The staff at SISM talked me through everything; how long it would take me to get back running pain free, what I needed to do to get back running and the long term effects of the injury if I didn’t take the time out to recover.
I started treatment at the beginning of July. The 10 week detailed treatment plan I got from the SISM team really differed from other physiotherapists I had attended previously. During the following weeks I followed all instructions to reduce inflammation. During the next four weeks my pain went from a 6/10 to a 1/10. After the fifth week all the inflammation had gone and I was able to start rehab. I was instructed to focus on mobility and I was given an individualised program which was created especially for my recovery. I found both of these very beneficial in terms of control improvement and strength.
At the end of August I was introduced to the Running Team at SISM. I found the feedback I got from the team extremely helpful. During this session a video was taken of my running technique on a treadmill. It was highlighted that my ground contact was incorrect, I was over striding and had excessive rotation when running. At first I felt overwhelmed by how bad my running technique was when I watched the recording, but was assured over the next few weeks it would be corrected.
Over the next three weeks I changed the pattern of my run, with the guidance of the Running Team. I greatly improved my leg cycle, reduced my over striding and reduced the rotation of my upper body. My running pattern had to change if I wanted to stay injury free, by making these simple changes to my technique I instantly felt less pain while running. It took a couple of weeks to master my new running form but it was worth it, as I have been injury free since. I am extremely grateful to the staff at SISM clinic for their help and helping me get back to full fitness.
