What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive strategy that aims to help with the management of musculoskeletal conditions by stimulating the body’s natural healing process. The shockwave is a physical sound wave “shock,” not an electric one.
How does it help?
By stimulating the body’s natural healing process, there is an immediate reduction in pain and improved ease of movement.
What is it used for?
It is most commonly used to treat plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, calcific shoulders, and tendon issues. However, we use it for a wide range of injuries in the clinic including muscle injuries of the hip, thigh, and lower limbs.
What are the risks?
Shockwave therapy is low risk and complications are rare. Sometimes it may cause increased sensitivity and pain, but gets better with time.
Shockwave therapy is not allowed if you:
Please tell the clinician if you have a cardiac pacemaker, are taking any blood thinning medication, or are taking any anti-inflammatory medication.
What should I do after the treatment?
You can carry on with your normal activities but avoid any exercise that feels painful for 48 hours after treatment.
Do no put ice on the treated area or take anti-inflammatory medication, as this will stop the inflammatory and healing processes the shockwave therapy has started.
Your clinician will decide how many sessions are required depending on your injury and chronicity.
I have used the SISM Clinic for treatment and rehabilitation for various sports injuries including ankle, hamstring and groin injuries.Martin and his staff have always been very professional and knowledgeable in their work. I would highly recommend them.
